Despite the name, athletic therapy isn’t just for athletes. It’s for anyone with a musculoskeletal issue who wants to move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing the things they enjoy. Whether you’re dealing with persistent aches and pains, a work-related injury, postural issues, or recovering from surgery, athletic therapy focuses on how your body moves as a whole. Treatment and exercise are tailored to your daily demands: work, recreation, parenting, or sport, not just high-level athletics. The goal is simple: reduce pain, restore function, and build a body that’s more resilient in everyday life.

If you’re new to athletic therapy or just new to working with me, knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable and confident heading into your session. Here’s a breakdown of how an appointment typically flows and what we’ll focus on together.

Intake & Getting the Full Picture

Your session starts with a review of your intake form, followed by a more in-depth conversation about what’s bringing you in. We’ll talk about your current symptoms, injury history, training or activity demands, and any goals you have, whether that’s returning to sport, managing pain, or simply moving better day-to-day. This part is just as important as the hands-on work, as it helps guide the assessment and treatment plan.

Comprehensive Assessment

From there, we move into a physical assessment tailored to you. This may include:

  • Postural assessment

  • Functional movement patterns

  • Range of motion testing

  • Manual muscle testing

  • Orthopaedic or special tests, when appropriate

The goal isn’t just to find where it hurts, but to understand why it hurts and how different parts of the body may be contributing.

Hands-On Treatment

Based on the findings from your assessment, treatment may include a combination of manual therapy techniques such as:

  • Soft tissue & Trigger point release

  • Joint mobilizations

  • Cupping - static or with movement

  • Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM)

  • Muscle Energy techniques

  • PNF stretching

These techniques are used to reduce pain, improve mobility, and prepare your body for movement and loading.

Exercise Prescription: The Cornerstone

Exercise prescription is the cornerstone of athletic therapy and a key part of your session. You’ll be given a personalized exercise program designed to reinforce the manual treatment you received, improve movement patterns, and build strength and resilience. These exercises are practical, purposeful, and tailored to your lifestyle, sport, or activity level.

Ongoing Support & Progression

Each session builds on the last. We’ll reassess, progress exercises, and adjust treatment as your body adapts and your goals evolve. Athletic therapy isn’t just about short-term relief; it’s about long-term results and helping you move with confidence.

Why Choose Athletic Therapy?

Athletic therapy offers a holistic approach to healing. We focus on the entire body, ensuring that we address not just the symptoms but the root causes of your discomfort. This method allows us to create a personalized plan that fits your unique needs.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We’ll discuss your health history, current concerns, and goals. This conversation is vital as it sets the foundation for your treatment plan.
